What is it?

Melasma is a common skin condition, stimulated by estrogen. It causes grey-brown patches, usually found on the face such as cheeks, bridge of nose, forehead, chin, and above the upper lip. It can also appear on other parts of the body such as the forearms and neck. Common factors include pregnancy, birth control, hormone imbalances, stress, and prolonged exposure to sunlight.

Although the condition is much more common in women, it may also uncommonly affect men. Melasma can be classified as epidermal, dermal, or mixed subtypes based on the distribution of excess melanin within the cutaneous layers.

It is important to note that some treatments such as IPL and overly aggressive treatments can worsen the condition. At Revita Skin Clinic, we offer laser resurfacing combined with proper home care to treat clients with Melasma.

Clients should expect a rubber band snapping sensation on the area treated during the laser treatment. Swelling and redness is common post-treatment for up to 24-48 hours. Clients are strongly encouraged to apply sun protection and take all further precautions when exposed to sun light. Treatments are done a month apart and can take anywhere from 15-45 min depending on the size of the area treated.

Clients are encouraged to come in for one of our complimentary consultations to have their skin assessed, and have a treatment tailored to their individual needs.
